Page speed

How fast the home page and the most visited pages load on phones, from Google's own test and real visitors.

What it measures

Open Page speed in the left menu. Each week Gralus runs Google's PageSpeed test on mobile (Google ranks the mobile version of a site) for the home page and the pages that get the most Google clicks, up to 8 pages. Each page gets Google's score out of 100: 90 and up is good, under 50 is slow.

Where Chrome has enough visits, you also see real visitors' timings over 28 days: how long until the main content shows, how quickly the page reacts to taps, and how much content moves while loading. These are the Core Web Vitals Google uses for ranking. Small sites often have them for the whole site only, not each page.

What slows the site down

Gralus groups Google's findings into plain causes, such as images bigger than they need to be, files that hold up the first paint, a slow server, or other companies' scripts, with how many pages each affects, how much time it could save and which files are involved. Most are fixed once for the whole site, in the theme, a caching or image plugin, or the hosting. “Full report” opens Google's own report for the page. When real visitors or Google's test find pages slow, a task appears in Today.
